2012 has been a unique and fabulous year for C-Waves Diving as our hard work, since 2010 with the Devon based artist Sue Austin, came to fruition. We had been co-developing and building an underwater jet propelled wheelchair with Sue and Freewheeling, for her to use in a number of scuba based Art performances called 'Creating the Spectacle', before and during the Olympics on Portland. This has been a great experience for all of the team involved and proved to a spectacular, breath taking and emotional production for both the audience and crew. You can view the film that we helped her to make for the LOCOG Paralympic commission here: youtube.com/watch?v=1atfF5mt0dk or visit her site at wearefreewheeling.org.uk to discover so much more.
Channel 4 also did a report on the performance. See below for photos of Rob being interviewed, and a video of the report (Rob's part starts around 1 minute 40)
In October I spent a long, challenging, but inspiring weekend, training with Jim Elliot founder of Dive Heart www.diveheart.org, an American company that trains disabled people to scuba dive. My training took place in Birmingham with the newly formed UK branch of Dive Heart and we look forward to working closely with them in the months ahead in building a lasting legacy for disabled diver training on the south coast.
February saw us providing Discover Scuba Diving lessons once again to twenty 16/17 year old students from Weymouth College at the Osprey Leisure Centre, Castletown Portland.
At the end of May we where back up in North London for the fifth year running, teaching snorkelling and scuba diving skills over a four day period to 115 children in year six at Roe Green Junior School, Kingsbury. This has become one of the highlights of the year for us, seeing so many young eager kids smiling from ear to ear at the end of the training session is so rewarding to all of us who teach.
Was a free photographic exhibition held at Osprey Leisure Centre, Castle Town, Portland of pictures taken during the summer of 2011.
The Photographs where taken by local divers and snorkelers above and below the waterline on Chesil Beach and in Portland Harbour, during free snorkelling sessions funded by the National Lottery Awards for All.
The Exhibition ran from 22nd of February to December 2012
Thanks to funding from the National Lottery we are very pleased to report that the free summer snorkelling events where a great success. Although Chesil Beach was often blown out due to the strong westerly winds that we experienced during August, September and October; we were still able to snorkel in Portland Harbour down behind Henry VIII's Castle. This area is so sheltered and made an excellent spot for the students of all ages who joined us, some of whom came every week without fail to take part in the lessons. We carried the sessions on well into the autumn as there was such a positive response. We also collaborated with Revive, iplay and the Portland Ranger to provide free snorkelling taster sessions during their family rock pooling day.
The age range of the students was vast; from seven to sixty plus. All of the participants were trying snorkelling for the first time and many went on to purchase their own equipment in order to carry on locally without our help in the future. The teaching and safety teams all enjoyed taking part and seeing kids, adults and families enjoying the freedom that snorkelling can give them- and it's right on their doorstep.
Due to the interest shown we have started a new snorkelling club which meets every Tuesday evening at the Osprey Leisure Centre Castle Town. Please call or email for details.
Again, without the support of the Lottery this would not have happened. Their funding has enabled us to purchase wetsuits and snorkelling equipment for the sessions, which we will be able to use at the club and during future events.
June 2011: C-Waves diving is really excited to have received funding from the National Lottery this year through its Awards For All Program.

October half term saw over seventy kids of all ages trying scuba diving for the first time, thanks to funding from Grass Roots. The event took place at the Osprey Leisure Centre in Castletown Portland.
We where able to offer 6 one hour classes to children from age 11 years and older we also included any parents or grandparents that wanted to give it a try. A wonderful time was had by all, with many children and adults asking us to now start a dive club. Watch this space!!!
To follow on from this success in November we enabled 23 sixth form students from Budmouth Technology College and 24 students from Weymouth College in December to also try scuba diving as part of their enrichment program again this was thanks to Grass Roots Funding.
We are now in discussions with Weymouth College to provide scuba diving throughout the summer term on a Wednesday afternoon to the sixth form students studying marine related projects.
All of the children and adults where given a PADI certificate to say that they had done a PADI Discover Scuba Dive with C-Waves Diving.
2010 Starts the new year with a new owner and management at the Riviera hotel who are looking forward to helping us make Bowleaze Cove into Weymouths best new dive centre and dive accommodation. The outdoor pool for training opens again in April. New course dates will follow soon.
September: C-Waves Diving was pleased to receive funding from the Community Foundation and Grass Roots Grants to organise a Try Scuba Diving Event during 2009/10. We are planning to put this into action during the October half term holidays in order to maximize the numbers of people able to attend. Watch this space- we will be announcing dates online and in the local press shortly.
August Saw us linking up with the Riviera Hotel at Bowleaze Cove Weymouth to create a new PADI Dive Resort. We are really excited by this opportunity to offer divers a new location to stay with great diving to be had right on our doorstep. July: We where able to take part in the Dorset Spirit of the Sea Festival thanks to kind funding from the Environment Agency we offered Try Scuba Diving and Snorkeling lessons for a fiver. This was only the 2nd year for this festival and a great privilege to be able to take part in this event. We hope to be involved again next year.
June: 5 of the dive team where invited back to Roe Green Junior School in north London for four days. We taught 117 Ten to Eleven year olds from year six the basics of Snorkeling and scuba diving, along with a video presentation on marine conservation. This was our second trip to Roe Green and just as much fun as last time. A big thank you to the head teacher Ms Loosemore and her staff for making it possible for all of us and the children to enjoy diving.
